Janine Julianna Darragh and Gina Mikel Petrie both earned their Ph.D.s from Washington State University and later met at a Spokane conference where they discovered their shared interest and experiences supporting teachers in rural Nicaraguan schools. Gina and Janine have a combined 63 years teaching experience and have worked with teachers across the globe, both online and in Chile, India, Lebanon, Mexico, Nicaragua, Italy, and so many more. Gina is a Professor of English as a Second Language at Eastern Washington University, where she both directs the teacher education program for English learners as well as leads the office that supports international students and students studying abroad. 70 miles away, Janine is a Professor of Literacy and ESL at the University of Idaho in the United States, where she instructs courses in English and ESL teacher preparation. Gina and Janine co-created the fhi360 OPEN course “Trauma-Sensitive Teaching” for English teachers around the world, with recent cohorts from Ukraine, Israel, and Pakistan. Janine and Gina’s current research and outreach focus is trauma-sensitive teaching, social-emotional learning, teacher well-being, and teaching in contexts of crisis. Combined, they have over 80 publications including books, journal articles, and book chapters.
